What's in a Name?

Elaine and I have a few ideas for names that we've been kicking around for some time now, but we haven't quite found that name that we just know is right. Unlike some of our friends, we haven't always known the perfect name for our child. Brandon & Anneke have already staked out "F. Loyd" for a potential baby (the 'F' stands for Furious), and our friend Ross Lord long ago laid claim to the names "Over," "Drug," "My," and "Crime" for his children (of course Ross has a similarly interesting name in that if the right 18 people die he would become "Lord Ross Lord, Lord of Ross").

So in the interest of expanding our horizons and seeing if there is some name out there that we haven't thought about yet, but would be perfect for our child, we're opening up the comment section of this post for a baby name contest! The grand prize of course is us using your suggestion for our baby's name. However, we reserve the right to stick with a name of our own choosing (who knows what you folks will come up with), in which case the winner gets to tell our child, "you were almost named (your suggestion here!)"

To kick things off, here's one of the suggestions we've already received from Elaine's uncle Pete:

Nothing is "sweeter" than a boy named "Peter." Or neater. Or, for those who work at Wal-Mart, a better greeter. PLUS, naming a child Peter has the added advantage of being able to tell everyone that the name was in honor of Allen's anatomy.

My mother wanted to name me Pollycarp - a bishop in the church- since I was born on St. Pollycarp's day (the old church calendar.)

Quite honestly, I am relieved that I did not have to carry such a "crappy" name. You may want to screen the name entries very carefully!

I love the name Esme for a girl (a la Nine Stories), but I don't think that I could sell Mike on that, and it doesn't really flow with our last name.

it might help to know how many and which surnames are requisite... greatly impacts the flow/sound/initialing of young fz's name...

Elise, the plan is to use Fawcett as a last name and a family name for the baby's middle name (either Zimmerman, Atchison, Grady, or Brady).

ok so i have been looking and decided that you guys should go with an irish name since you were over there when you decided to go ahead and try to start a family.

In lines with the peter suggestion i found the irish form is actualy Peadair and sounds much nicer then just plain Peter :)

other boy names...Aedan, Lorcan, Murtah and Tadhg (Ti+gue)some are a bit out there but at least original!

girl names...Neila, Niamh and Deirdre

haha without this website http://www.babynamesofireland.com/ i would have never been able to pronounce any of the names but it has a great feature which says the words for you and then tells a story about the name

I will admit this up front - I am stealing this from Cliff Claven on "Cheers..." If you add up the numerical values of all Grady/Zimmerman children ever born, you'll find that they will add up exactly to the year which they were born. So, I figure, your child has to be named...

Unless you decide to break a family tradition...

Nobody names their kids "Genghis" anymore, and "Genghis Fawcett" has a nice ring to it. Or, if you're going Irish, there was a magic fish in the Finn McCool legend. So, how about "Magic Fish Fawcett"?

Thanks for the ideas Chris, we thought about "Kublai" and "Salmon of Wisdom" but decided they didn't go with Fawcett, your suggestions sound much better.
